Happy Fourth!

Another year goes by that I am not properly joining in on the Fourth of July festivities, but I have no doubt that Americans everywhere are eating burgers and shooting off fireworks for me. Here in Pompeii (yes, I finally made it!), I'm having a celebration of my own. Today was the first day of my digging experience at the site! We've spent the majority of the past few days setting up equipment, editing reports, and dealing with issues of permits and such for admission and excavation. Though it has been great to be back with a group of wonderful people and in such a beautiful area, getting back to work on site has been extremely exciting. We cleared the area for our trench and look forward to long, hard days of moving dirt and digging holes.

We have managed to have some fun in the midst of working, though. Our campsite under the orange grove is as lovely as ever, and I can't remember being so excited for dinner as I am when we walk down the Porta Marina to a Peroni and a standard GS dinner (salad, meat, mozz, pesto, corn, veggies, bread, tomatoes, and other nomderful things). Tonight we had a special Fourth of July hot dog festa, broke out Bananagrams, and attempted to catch up on our favorite YouTube videos, though the internet here didn't want to cooperate. It's been almost a week now, but it feels as though I never left.

Tomorrow promises to be full of excitement with our first full day of digging. Time for sleep, and Happy Fourth to everyone!
